FAQs

  • Therapy can be helpful for most people who are ready for and seeking change. It is normal to feel unsure about whether or not to start or whether or not you are ready because it feels like it might be too difficult or too overwhelming. I put my clients in the driver’s seat when it comes to pacing their sessions. I walk alongside them, guiding the way, but they decide how fast we walk. Many people who find their way to me have worked with many therapists in the past and did not receive the kind of help they needed at the time. It often takes time before we find a therapist who is a good fit and fits our needs.

  • The way I conceptualize therapy helping others is by making the unconscious conscious. That means that the things that happened to us in childhood or early times in our lives can make us stuck in unhealthy patterns as adults. We usually do not know this because they are unconscious ruts we get into. By making them conscious, we can begin to gain insight about why we are holding onto that wound and how to heal it.

  • That is up to the individual. We will first discuss some of your history so I can gain context on who you are. Then we will make sure you are stable enough to dive into understanding how your mind works. We will talk about a wide range of things including how to get through the day to day and feel relatively safe. Then we can explore more deeply into the inner workings of your mind. You always have a choice about what you share and do not share.

  • This is not generally what a psychotherapist or psychologist does, except in the context of safety concerns. We will discuss alternatives to dangerous behaviors. If you undergo psychological assessment, then you will receive recommendations based on those results.

  • No, in the state of Wisconsin where I am licensed, psychologists cannot prescribe medication. I’m happy to talk to you about whether or not medication may be beneficial and I may be able to guide you towards how to find a prescriber.

  • This depends on the individual. Generally, the more work someone has already done, the younger someone is, and the fewer traumas they have been through, the quicker the work can be done. The clients I usually work with are in therapy for anywhere from a couple years to several years.

  • Individual therapy involves one person coming to meet with a licensed psychotherapist for some type of healing of the mind.

  • When we have our consultation call I will inform you of the insurance companies that I am currently in-network with. Before your first session we will check to see what your “patient responsibility” for each session will be. This could be anything from a $0 copay to paying the entire $200 session fee until your deductible is met. If I am not in-network with your insurance we can look into whether or not you can get reimbursement from your insurance company using Mentaya, an out-of-network billing company that works with you to get reimbursed after you have already paid my full fee.

  • You would pay for each session on the day of the session. Each session is $200. If you have a copay or are paying on a deductible or paying out of pocket, that fee will automatically be charged with the card you keep on file with me for this purpose.

  • No.

  • I request that my clients give 48 hours notice for any cancellations. If the client is self-pay or pays through their employer’s or other commercial insurance company, there is a $50 late cancellation fee. If the client has Medicaid or Medicare insurance, a cancellation fee is not allowed by these insurance companies.

  • I offer virtual sessions and can also provide in-person sessions in Burlington, Wisconsin at 488 Milwaukee Ave. in The Loop Commons’ private office space. Please note that this office is on the 2nd floor and there is no elevator or escalator to reach it.

  • Yes, everything we talk about is private and confidential. There are a few notable exceptions that will be covered in more detail in the intake paperwork. The major exceptions are if your records are ordered by a judge to be released for any reason, if I believe you are a danger to yourself or others and have to call the police, and if I suspect any child abuse of someone who is currently a child, I have to report that to Child Protective Services.

  • Yes, unless you are paying out of pocket, I am required to keep written records documenting our work together. If we are billing insurance they usually require a diagnosis code to prove medical necessity, and they occasionally provide quality assurance audits to help ensure their customers are receiving quality care.

I will be your guide in digging deep into your challenges so that we can better understand why they are there in the first place.
